Some careers and work expectations can be all-consuming, and the thought of taking a holiday may seem inconceivable for some of you. However, it’s important to remember that maintaining a sustainable work-life balance is crucial for long-term success and overall wellbeing. Whilst you may feel that work and your job demand intense dedication, finding moments for rest and enjoying holidays and festive seasons will still be crucial!
With this, my top 5 tips around navigating work during this festive season are as follows:
1. Set your boundaries to help with work-life balance
As the festivities unfold, it is essential to establish clear boundaries between professional and personal commitments. Plan ahead and establish certain hours for work, and certain hours for downtime, in order to avoid continuous engagement.
2. Prioritise self-care
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, prioritizing self-care during Christmas becomes crucial for overall wellbeing. It’s a time to embrace the spirit of giving, but that should also extend to yourselves. Practicing mindfulness, taking a leisurely walk, spending time with friends and family, taking intentional breaks or engaging in activities that bring comfort can help in staying present and taking care of yourself during the holiday season.
3. Try to limit technology use
In the heart of the holidays, there’s a significant opportunity to forge deeper connections with loved ones by consciously limiting technology use. By setting aside phones and devices, families and friends can create an environment that encourages genuine conversations, shared laughter, and helps in ensuring you are giving yourself a break as well. This can be scheduled into your day so you can ensure that you have at least 1 hour of the day either around the dinner table, whilst going on a walk or just while spending time with loved ones, where technology is out of reach.
4. Remain active as much as possible
Staying active during the festive season holds significant importance for both physical and mental well-being. Amidst the celebration and well deserved indulgences, maintaining an active lifestyle contributes to overall health. Importantly, regular physical activity aids in managing stress, boosting mood, and enhancing energy levels, all of which can be particularly beneficial during a period which may feel overwhelming due to trying to balancing it all. This can also be in conjunction to the other points mentioned above as you would be away from technology, prioritizing self-care, enjoying a positive work-life balance, and could be spending time with loved ones by going on a walk with them.
5. Don’t be too hard on yourself
Navigating this period can be challenging, but it’s important to remember to not be too hard on yourself. Taking a step back during the holidays provides a chance to recharge, reflect and spend quality time with loved ones. It’s important to recognize that by taking some time off work, this does not equate to you losing progress you’ve made in your career. In fact, it can be a strategic and necessary step for long-term success. Progress isn’t solely defined by constant motion; it encompasses the ability to adapt, grow, and gain more personal development. So rather than fearing setbacks, consider time off as an investment in your overall well-being, ensuring fulfilment, happiness, and preventing burn out. Try to be kind to yourself, leave room for self-compassion and remember that the holidays are about shared moments.
