Background And Experience
Dr Aparna Kurup is a psychotherapist-in-training and is currently completing her Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy and Counselling.
Before transitioning to psychotherapy, Aparna spent over a decade working as an academic at the National University of Singapore, where she taught various undergraduate and graduate courses on trauma and representation. Her research focused on trauma narratives, ethics, and the ways individuals make meaning of difficult experiences. Her background in exploring trauma narratives continues to inform her therapeutic perspective on storytelling, identity, and healing.
Aparna’s experience in working within a university environment has deepened her understanding of the pressures young people face as they navigate identity, academic expectations, and life transitions. It informs her mental health training through a sensitive approach that supports youth and young adults in managing stress, uncertainty, and growth.
Approach
Aparna’s interest in trauma-informed care is shaped by both her psychotherapy training and her earlier research on trauma and representation.
She is particularly interested in supporting women through the emotional and psychological transitions of the reproductive life cycle—including fertility challenges, pregnancy, postpartum changes, and perimenopause—recognising the complex interplay of hormonal, relational, and identity shifts that can influence mental health during these times.
She is also interested in working with individuals navigating the emotional and relational complexities of expatriate life and cross-cultural transitions, as well as those experiencing grief and loss.
Through her practice, she aims to offer a thoughtful and supportive space where people can process sorrow, change, and the reshaping of life after significant endings. Grounded in the belief that each person’s story deserves to be met with curiosity, compassion, and care, she hopes to create a warm, reflective, and collaborative environment where clients can explore life transitions, relationships, and emotional challenges at a pace that feels safe and meaningful.
More About Aparna
Outside clinical training, Aparna loves unwinding with a game of badminton, practicing her Japanese, and taking long leisurely walks with her beagle.
Testimonials From Clients & Health Provider Partners
Just wanted to highlight that my experience with Us was a very pleasant one from the start. My therapist, Ariel was a perfect fit for me. She made the sessions feel like a safe space, and was always celebrating my little victories with me. I look forward to every session knowing I was going to leave the room feeling a little bit more empowered, and that my time would be well spent. I would definitely recommend the clinic to all, and assure everyone that scheduling appointments are a breeze. The clinic is flexible and accommodating too.
Overall, I'm quite happy. I feel Ariel is supportive and patient with me, even when I keep going back to the same topics over and over.
